The Chain Valley Colliery is an underground coal mine operating at the southern end of Lake Macquarie, approximately 60km south of Newcastle and directly adjacent to the Vales Point Power Station.
Mining at Chain Valley commenced back in 1962, with 2012 marking 50 years of operation. Mining has occurred in three separate coal seams, the Wallarah, Great Northern and Fassifern seams.
Current mining employs the use of miniwall mining (a similar process but narrower face width when compared to longwall mining, and the use of continuous miners for development.
